Top Twelve Essential Oils

 I have chosen these oils because of their versatility as well as their medicinal properties. They can be used in blends with each other or individually and are excellent for many treatments - from coping with stress to making air freshener.  Click on the linked name to view the full profile.

 1.LAVENDER
lavender angustifolia

Relaxing, analgesic, antiseptic.  Great for treating wounds and burns. It speeds healing and prevents or reduces scarring and can be applied directly to the skin.  Useful for cuts, scrapes, b, sunburn, insect bites, sore muscles, headache, bruises, sprains, acne, rashes.  Also treats mild depression, irritability, stress, insomnia and headaches.  It also improves the synergy of any blend.  It is one of the most relaxing oils and the most versatile.  If you only have one bottle of aromatherapy oil in your home, this should be it.

 2. PEPPERMINT
mentha piperita

Invigorating and cooling; decongesting, analgesic and muscle relaxer.  Great for headaches, sore muscles, general aches and pains, cold, flu, fever and congestion.  Relieves many digestive ailments such as gas, indigestion and heartburn.   Also an effective and pleasant pesticide!

3. CINNAMON
Cinnamomum zeylancium

Cinnamon essential oil is highly anti-microbial and anti-bacterial for a great diversity of infectious bacteria. Studies have shown the strength of cinnamon bark oil to eliminate many forms of pathogenic organisms. Cinnamon essential oil has traditionally been used for fast relief of infections of the bladder and the digestive tract, as well as enzymatic deficiency in the gut.  It is also useful as a sexual stimulant and aphrodisiac, and it gives a warm, rich, pleasing aroma to blends.

 4. LEMON
citrus limonum

Citrus oils have long been used for their calming and balancing actions. The zesty aroma of lemon will uplift you and disinfect the air in your home at the same time. Add a few drops of Lemon essential oil to cleaning water.  Use neat on wood to deep clean while bringing out the shine.  It is also an especially good tonic and detoxifier for the body.  It treats many problems and supports many body systems and organs such as liver, lymphatic, gastro-urinary, skin.  It is used in cellulite reduction and weight loss,  insect bites, tension headaches, for aiding digestion.

 5. YLANG YLANG
cananga odorata

Very effective for nervous disorders, epilepsy, anxiety and depression.  It calms and balances the adrenal glands thus it is very effective at relieving stress and calming the nervous system, without being sedative.  It is also considered to be very sensual oil, euphoric and romantic.  It is also a favorite for spa facials as it is excellent for improving all skin types.

FRANKINCENSE
boswellia serrata

Woody, earthy, with rich citrus note.  This is a very high quality oil with an exceptional aroma. The CO2 extraction process captures a broader spectrum of the classic Frankincense scent - it is more complex than is typical, with a deeply mysterious nuance and rich, resinous woody notes. The oil is grounding, and often used during meditation to calm the mind and slow breathing rate. Wild trees are not harmed by the harvesting of the resin.

 

7. SWEET ORANGE
citrus sinensis

Aromatherapy use: Sweet orange is a balanced uplifting and calming essential oil, like many of the citrus varieties. Orange may be more calming because of its sweetness - whereas Lemon may be more stimulating. The aroma will almost certainly bring a smile to one's face, and may be accompanied by a pleasant feeling of joy.

8. EUCALYPTUS
eucalyptus globulus

This is a wonderfully versatile and useful oil with great medicinal qualities. It is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibiotic, diuretic, analgesic and deodorizing. So it is great for relieving coughs and colds. Eucalyptus also helps boost the immune system, relieves sunburn and muscle tension.

9. CLARY SAGE
salvia sclarea

This member of the mint family does not smell minty.  It is widely used for female hormonal problems and cooling hot flashes.  It is also used for easing menstrual cramps and pms.  It is a necessity for women.    It's benefits are euphoric, centering, visualizing! It is valued for creating a sense of relaxation and easing tension in both mind and body. Clary Sage also has the ability to reduce pain, for soothing tension and muscle aches, and  insomnia. It is well known as an ingredient in perfume and also benefits those with oily skin and dandruff. 

10. GERANIUM
graveolens pelargonium

This oil works profoundly on the emotions and has many other uses and smells lovely.  It is great for skin conditions as an anti-inflammatory.  It helps heal  rashes, irritations, eczema and it is the best treatment for chilblains.  Helps balance hormones in women, is an anti-depressant and can also be relaxing and up-lifting. Great as an insect repellant; also for cuts and bruises and fungal infections. Its antiseptic and astringent properties contribute to its usefulness.

11.  GINGER
zingber officinale

Calefacient and peptic. For sea sickness and various enteric diseases.  Ginger oil do wonders in ensuring the physical fitness. · It is very useful in treating malaria, bronchitis, flu, constipation, and rheumatism. ·Dispels gas and intestinal distress.  Analgesic.   It has warming properties to fight against depression and loneliness.

12.  GRAPEFRUIT
citrus paradisii

Antioxidant , antispasmodic, diuretic. For cellulites, obesity and urine retention.  Refreshing, cheerful and uplifting, it is great for the mood. Grapefruit oil helps fight against stress and depression.  Grapefruit oil contains vitamin C which is very much useful for our immune system • It provides protection against colds, coughs, and flu.
