Lemon Verbena is a precious oil and is often not readily available.  It can be adulterated with Lemon Thyme or Litsea Cubeba, or anything high in citral can be sold in its place.  Authentic Lemon Verbena Essential Oil does not smell like the bath and body products sold in department stores.

Lemon Verbena essential oil is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, fever reducer and sedative. It is generally inhaled for stress, insomnia, depression, nervous fatigue and to help during an asthmatic crisis.

Jeanne Rose says that it is strongly anti-viral, and may be applied directly to a cold sore to reduce pain and symptoms. HOWEVER given the risk of sensitization from the use of Lemon Verbena, I would choose Melissa for that purpose.

SAFETY: Lemon Verbena is one of the most sensitizing essential oils, it should not be used on the skin. The International Fragrance Research Association warns its member companies not to use it in any dilution for perfumery. Please restrict this lovely spirit-lifter to the aromalamp or diffuser, or for use in a room or linen spray. Or wear it in your favorite piece of Aromatherapy Jewelry to be surrounded by its aroma and energy.

Safety:  Skin sensitizer, photoxic, not recommended to use on skin (IFRA strongly advises against the use of this oil in cosmetics and perfumes).
